Squint at the cover of Circus and it's easy to mistake Britney Spears for the flow-haired Jessica Simpson--an indication that the bold come-ons of 2007's Blackout, a commercial success but a critical letdown, may have given way to something softer and prettier. Don’t be fooled. Circus differs from Blackout in a number of ways, the most important being that 1) it keeps its ringmasters--i.e., its producers--in check instead of allowing them to run an overly sleek show, and 2) Brit brings it vocally here in a way she hasn’t since 2003’s In the Zone (check "Kill the Lights," on which she channels her mentor Madonna and the liquid-y "Blur"). Beyond that, Circus is, as its title promises, a Blackout-like spectacle. Which is not to say the songs being made under this particular big top aren't top quality. Those who pine for the pre-trainwreck Britney will warm to the suggestive but not outright slutty "Mmm Papi," and anyone who can't get enough of the embattled publicity magnet will eat up "Womanizer" and the title track. Spears--let's be honest--lacks acrobatic grace, at least under tabloid scrutiny. What's great about Circus is it proves she's still willing to jump through hoops to make likable, stylish music. --Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
Circus is the seventh album by Britney Spears. It rolls into town on the heels of an MTV VMA awards sweep, where Britney walked away with three Moonmen awards for 'Video of the Year', 'Best Female' and 'Best Pop Video' for 'Piece Of Me'. Circus is the follow up to her critically well received album, Blackout, just in in time for her 27th birthday. The lead single, 'Womanizer' (produced by the up and coming Atlanta production team The Outsyders) has already created a frenzy amongst Britney fantaics, radio and the media alike-underscoring Britney's continued reign as one of the Queens of Pop.
My CD arrived in the mail within a few days. I was very satisified my purchase.
I've been a Brit fan for a long time and even though I fell off listening to her music for a few years I decided to buy this album and I'm so glad I did. I love it! After listening to any album through a good amount of times, you start having favorites and even though I do I hardly ever fast forward through any songs here. The shipment was quick, nothing was wrong with the product and I still enjoy it! It comes with a little poster which I put on the wall =) I think there's a good mix of dancey-pop songs, a couple mellow ones, and the other few that go into an album.
I didn't start liking her until she went nuts. There are some great "bite back" songs on this album that make me laugh and make me applaud her for showing the ridiculousness of her own position in this society. Whether she means to or not, she makes me smile at the irony.
I just want to start off by saying this is a fun album ,and that's all it's meant to be. It isn't meant to be a biography even though there are songs like "out from under' and "unusual you" that have a faint sense of realism to them.
Britney is out to do what she does best which is to promote fun pop music that leaves you repeating it way after it's has stopped playing. The beyond catchy "Womanizer" gets everything started and has a faint hint of Blackout. It just goes more up beat than anything did on the previous album. I don't know about you but everything on the blackout album seemed darker. ( not that that's a bad thing but this album tries it's best to avoid the darker side.)
I think this album's whole goal was to show us the fun, light,Carefree spears of yesteryear (circa 2001). It succeeds at it.
After the blast of womanizer it is follwed by circus. Which is fun and very defined. It allows her to move on and stay the same all at the same time. Then there is "out from under" which is actually truly enjoyable and would have made killer sinlge for her ,in my opinion.
Then there is kill the lights which is sort of like a throw back to blackout but doesn't hit anywhere as hard. It's alright but sadly doesn't bare worth repeating a lot to me. Shattered glass is a cool number but really could have been left as a throw away track not really essential to the album but it does seem to mirror her actually life adn that makes it a little more interesting.
Then there is the controversial single "If U Seek AMY". Upon the first listen i was hooked and it has a very kiddy sing-along feel to it. Then you realize what she is actually saying and you are like WHOA!!! Then it takes on it's other subtle meaning. This gives the song a little boldness. It's a fun number and that's really all it's meant to be. ( sort of reminds me of what to you see is what you get from her second album. I think this is mainly becasue it is produced by the same guy.)
Then their is Unusual You which is slower and i think could have made a sleeper hit for her. It just has a very "away" feeling to it and very restful feel. It also does seem to come off as kind of autobiograohical even if it isn't.
One of my favorite songs called Blur comes off as very subdued. It feels like a retelling of a night gone bad. She talks of being disorientated and not knowing where she is or who she is with. Afraid that she might have done something not so good. This song is heavy on the repetition which can get old for some people real quick but the message was what to got to me.You feel as if there is some strange real life experience to this song but you can't quite put your finger on it. The production on this song is top notch. It is done by Danja the same guy that brought us lots of the tracks on Blackout. So there is lightly darker feel to this one.
After this song the mood changes somewhat for sun shine and 60s grooves. Mmm papi. I did like this song a lot upon first listen but after a little while you are kind of like okay what esle do you have for us , Brit?
The same can be said of Mannequin, I didn't like it intially when i heard it played in the background during a rehearsal shoot of hers. Then once i heard the full album version i was hooked. I really thought it should have been a single. But now i realize it shouldn't mainly because somewhere in all the auto tune and blurred words. You get kind of sick of it. I can only really listen to this number occassionally.
Then there is lace and leather one of the better songs on the album. I like the guitar in the middle it works out well and kind og gives the song a more classic rock 80s feel.
My baby is sweet song worth listening to occassionally. This one is obviously about her kids. Not my favorite but i do like her voice on it.
Radar makes a grand reappearance from Blackout with a slightly altered version of it's self. It is a nice song but not really fitting with the songs on this album. I think it was here just to fullfil an obligation.
All in all it's fun albunm which show cases why we like Spears. Its her overall lightness and ability to take you out of your reality and pull you into her world.
Britney Spears' personal problems during the latter half of the `00s were discussed to death all over television, so I'm not going to go into that. I never had anything against her as an artist; still, I wasn't really impressed with some of her early albums. I didn't get to hear her "comeback" album Blackout, but I decided to listen to Circus.
The best song on here would have to be "My Baby", an acoustic dedication to her two sons. The thing is, though, when I hear that song I'm reminded of a question my sister asks when she heard "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart"..."Why doesn't she sing like this more often???" Anyway, "If U Seek Amy" is also catchy, and you can tell it was only written for shock value because it really isn't about anything. The bonus track "Radar" is also pretty decent.
That's about it for highlights, though. "Womanizer" is a little overrated, but a few songs are skippable, like "Mmm Papi" and "Kill the Lights". And although I do understand what she's getting at in "Unusual You", that's an unusual way to talk about it. Everything else is okay, but if you're not a devoted fan of Britney, B.I.F.
